Choosing birth control is personal, and for women who want to prevent pregnancy or are struggling with heavy periods its important to know your options. If you’re considering a form of contraception including an IUD (intrauterine device) book a contraception consultation with your Doctor to discuss which option is right for you.
Funding may be available for consultations and insertion if you are under 18 years, have a community services card, are Māori or Pasifika, have a currently active long term severe mental health disorder (including any psychotic disorder, bipolar affective disorder, severe depression).
Depo Provera

A contraceptive injection containing progestogen. Some people call it “the injection”, “the jab” or “DP”. Progestogen is similar to one of the hormones produced naturally in the ovaries. The injection is given every 13 weeks.

  • Typically, Depo Provera is 97% effective. This means three out of 100 people using Depo Provera will get pregnant each year. If you have your injections on time (every 13 weeks) it can be more than 99% effective.
  • You must see a Doctor every 12 months for repeat prescribing
  • The risk of endometrial cancer is reduced by 80%. There is no overall change in the rate of cancer of the cervix, the ovary or breast cancer.

Mirena:

  • Over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy for up to 8 years
  • The first and only hormone-releasing IUD that is FDA-approved to treat heavy periods—also known as  heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB)—for up to 5 years.
  • Can be used whether or not you’ve had a baby
  • Can be removed by your healthcare provider anytime in case your plans change.

Costing for unfunded IUD insertion and removal:

You will need to be referred to a different provider for insertion or removal of this. Cost for this can range from $180-$400

Jadelle Implant

The implant is made up of two small rods the size of a matchstick. The rods are put under the skin in the inside of your arm. They slowly release a hormone called progestogen.

  • More than 99% effective
  • Works for up to five years
  • ‘Fit and forget’ – you don’t need to do anything once it has been put in
  • Your bleeding may change. If it is annoying there are pills to help
  • You can choose when to have it taken out
